{"id":285,"date":"2016-01-31T21:07:35","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T01:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/?p=285"},"modified":"2016-02-29T18:51:07","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T22:51:07","slug":"finding-your-ikigai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/theater-life\/finding-your-ikigai\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding Your Ikigai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ikigai-darma.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-286 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ikigai-darma-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"Ikigai-darma\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ikigai-darma-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ikigai-darma-150x148.jpg 150w, https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ikigai-darma-151x150.jpg 151w, https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ikigai-darma.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ikigai:<\/strong> S<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333333;\">omething one lives for<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">;\u2009\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333333;\">purpose in life<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dharma:<\/strong> \u00a0<strong>Duty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the past seven years, I&#8217;ve been teaching a weekly &#8220;Mind\/Body\/Spirit&#8221; class at the Jewish Guild for the Blind. \u00a0This is the organization I was originally introduced to by our theatrical union, AFTRA (prior to SAG-AFTRA merger), which gave their membership the ability to learn broadcasting skills as a volunteer reader for the visually-impaired at InTouch Networks supported and housed for 30 years at The Guild. \u00a0Shortly after I came on board in 2008, however, the Guild stopped funding, closing down the 5 soundproof studios used daily by a rotating roster of volunteer broadcasters.<\/p>\n<p>The late Richard J. Koziol, Board\u00a0President &amp; Broadcast\u00a0Technology Consultant and\u00a0Gail Starkey, Director, for InTouch Networks, however, reorganized a new 501(c)(3) to take over the feed and instantly become Gatewave. \u00a0All the volunteers were then given the challenge to learn how to record out of their homes. \u00a0Quite a transition! \u00a0I now have my own show, &#8220;The Cinematic Arts,&#8221; which has been a HUGE commitment of volunteer time, but it&#8217;s also an exciting place to do my &#8220;duty&#8221; and filter the healthy, more nutritious nuggets out of our current pop culture to share with my listeners.<\/p>\n<p>Who&#8217;s listening? \u00a0I have no idea. \u00a0Some of my soap fans have tried to find me, but I air only once &#8212; no podcasts\/no replay. \u00a0Very old-fashioned. \u00a0And I relish the responsibility. \u00a0Is something like this my &#8220;greatest good?&#8221; I have no idea. \u00a0I do know being introduced to the Guild led me to teaching this uniquely designed &#8220;Mind\/Body\/Spirit&#8221; class long after InTouch Networks left the premises. \u00a0And yes, my class gives back as much, if not more, as I give.<\/p>\n<p>The premise behind our class is &#8220;awareness.&#8221; \u00a0Not only of the body, but of the mind. \u00a0I find myself continually reaffirming weekly to our class, &#8220;despite your limitations, your true power is within your own mind. \u00a0You have the power to affect change in your life depending how you react to challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What you think = becomes what you say&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What you say = becomes what you ultimately do in life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What you do = becomes who you are as a person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And that ultimately, I would faithfully profess, &#8220;<em>is your dharma.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now, I always thought <em>dharma<\/em> meant <em>purpose in life,<\/em>\u00a0however according to the dictionary, Dharma means <em>duty<\/em> and Ikigai is more rightly, <em>your purpose in life<\/em>. \u00a0Thank you, <a title=\"Ikigai\" href=\"http:\/\/bonniegillespie.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bonnie Gillespie, Casting Director<\/a> for setting me straight. \u00a0I&#8217;m now sharing Bonnie&#8217;s bubble chart pictured above with my Business of the Buzz, social media class for the SAG-AFTRA Conservatory. \u00a0Bonnie breaks down the Ikigai Bubble pictured above in detail on her <a href=\"http:\/\/bonniegillespie.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a> so I won&#8217;t do that here. \u00a0Suffice it to say I&#8217;ve been sitting in the Passion Section to the detriment of the Professional Section for a little too long. \u00a0Events do seem to be leading me into the Mission Section, but whether all this will become a vocation or a profession, is yet to be determined. \u00a0Still seeking the balance of the bubble.<\/p>\n<p>Are others approaching retirement age questioning the same? \u00a0Examining choice &#8212; to the detriment of opportunity?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Britt Hall, Minister for Unity (NY) recently presented the Year of 12 Powers.
