Researched by <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2007\/07\/the-making-of-an-expert\">Professor K. Anders Erickson<\/a>, Florida State University. \u00a0He apparently studied athletes, musicians and chess grand-masters. \u00a0I would probably have to put Broadway dancers and members of any dance company into that category, also. \u00a0Those of us known as &#8220;dancers&#8221; (not hoofers) trained since the age of 10 or earlier &#8212; as any athlete does &#8212; to build strength, stretch and technique in our bodies to perfect our chosen craft. \u00a0The original Pippin, I&#8217;m proud to say, was my last dance show on Broadway. \u00a0Originally trained in ballet and modern dance, I&#8217;m still in class, but it&#8217;s more about the &#8216;love&#8217; of dance than trying to compete with the next generation. \u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-383 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pippin-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pippin-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pippin-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/denisepence.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pippin.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 162px) 100vw, 162px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I first began working with the women of The Rehearsal Club in 2006, I had no idea where we&#8217;d go as a group or whether I&#8217;d be able to contribute anything of significance to further our goal to &#8220;<em>preserve the legacy of The Rehearsal Club and inspire future generations of aspiring young artists.<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0I did know I was stifled creatively working in a law firm 24\/7 <em>(this was my motherhood after stardom chapter<\/em>). \u00a0Working with the supportive, generous women of The Rehearsal Club was my creative outlet, and because I&#8217;d built a strong wall of trust with my company, they allowed my extracurricular pursuits on company time. \u00a0Looking back 12 years later, I&#8217;d say we&#8217;ve become &#8216;expert&#8217; in the fields of marketing and public relations.<\/p>\n<p>Our journey, however, fits the theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5MgBikgcWnY\">TEDx speaker<\/a> and author of the book, <a href=\"https:\/\/first20hours.com\/\">The First 20 Hours: Mastering the Tough Part of Learning Anything<\/a>, Josh Kaufman. \u00a0Because we applied ourselves systematically to the three guidelines Josh outlines in his book (which was not published at the time &#8212; we were following instinct), we ultimately arrived at our current &#8220;expert level.&#8221; \u00a0Here&#8217;s an overview:<\/p>\n<p><strong>JOSH&#8217;S GUIDELINES TO LEARNING:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Clarify the Goal:<\/strong> \u00a0Now that our women of the RC were scattered all over the globe, we knew we needed a website if we were going to broaden our network outside New York City. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.homestead.com\/\">Homestead.com<\/a> allowed us one free month so that was an easy commitment. \u00a0We pulled our team of five together: \u00a0I wanted to learn and had good organizational skills, another&#8217;s husband knew more than any of us about websites, and another gal loved working with colors and graphic design. \u00a0So we met, brainstormed and had a working site up within two weeks. \u00a0Yeah!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Self-Correct: \u00a0<\/strong>Last year, we launched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rehearsalclubnyc.com\/\">a whole new site<\/a> based on our previous mistakes, learning along the way. \u00a0Armed with the learning curve created by working with our RC women,\u00a0 I used my newly-acquired knowledge to get <a href=\"https:\/\/denisepence.com\/\">my own website<\/a> up;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.steveboockvor.com\/\">my husband&#8217;s site<\/a> and his business site with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historyaliveny.com\/\">History Alive<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove Barriers<\/strong>: \u00a0If you&#8217;re going to practice learning anything new, you gotta turn off the TV, put aside the alerts from your phone and stop surfing social media for a period of time each day. \u00a0I&#8217;m now teaching social media monthly to other SAG professionals who realize what our Rehearsal Club women discovered: \u00a0You cannot ignore social media &#8212; but there is a right way and a wrong way to use it. \u00a0Getting started, yes, is the hardest part for most of my students, but focus and consistency is key. \u00a0Jeff Olson, author of the <a href=\"http:\/\/slightedge.org\/\">Slight Edge,<\/a> proves the 21\/90 rule: \u00a0It takes 21 days to create a habit; 90 days to change your lifestyle. \u00a0&#8220;<em>Once you\u2019ve got it, then you will discover how your philosophy\u2026creates your attitude\u2026creates your actions\u2026creates your results\u2026creates YOUR LIFE!
