Summer Lovin . . .

Riverside Drive Park, NYC

Why does this summer seem like the calm before the storm? Tomorrow is supposed to be complete chaos in the City with the Gay Pride Parade — which we plan to attend. Gotta do it. Gotta show up for equal rights. Gotta keep the faith that America is still the land of the free.

Do you ever get Letters From the Universe? And keep them to remind you anything is still possible? I do. Here’s one:

Having a dream . . . Courage

Visualizing your dream . . . Persistence

Physically moving towards your dream . . . Guts

Letting go of the “cursed hows” . . . Wisdom.

The look on your friend’s faces when they see you . . . Priceless

This is how I came to New York in the first place. I musta been much more wise back then because I totally “let go of” how my life would unfold. However back then, when I knocked on a door, it opened. Young, white and pretty. Pretty powerful calling card. But my mother always said, “God gives and he’ll take away. The day will come when you’re no longer young. No longer so pretty. You gotta build the brain, too.” Discipline. Skill.

I heard you, Mom (now 95). But I really wonder what is considered valuable in this country anymore. Trump in the White House? Melania, a call girl who got more than she bargained for . . . and a Republican Party that’s . . . what? Afraid of him??? What the f%$#@#??? My own mother thinks he swell.

I, however, feel we need a leader we can respect in this country (OMG, how I miss Obama & Michelle). I know they weren’t perfect in foreign policy, but I felt such pride in their intelligence and commitment to do the very best job they could do to lead our country with integrity (and I love her organic garden!).

The debates this week are being analyzed by every commentator on every network — who won? Who lost? Who F$%$# up? Who has the ability to beat Trump? Who will be grounded enough to stand up to him when he’s “prowling” in back of you (still wish Hillary had called him on his actions, but she was fighting her own demons). Hard to anticipate someone as unhinged as Trump mentally. Good people get stomped on because they don’t expect anyone to attack and take away what you’ve earned. But they do. The higher you climb, the harder the fall. I doubt I would shed a tear if Trump lost. His winning, however, should create fear in every sane American who believes in freedom for all in this country.

Yeah, we’re in the calm before the storm. Kamala Harris would be someone I’d like to see go head-to-head with Trump. He totally isn’t ready for that battle. But I also like Corey Booker, Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg. My El Paso compatriot, Beto O’Rourke, seemed a little lost on the debate floor. Good going solo, but . . . ya gotta learn to work with others.

And it’s important for we, the people, to pay attention!

The True Meaning of Life:

We are visitors on this planet.

We are here for ninety or one hundred years at the most.

During that period, we must try to do something good, something useful,

with our lives.

If you contribute to other people’s happiness,

you will find the true goal, the true meaning of life.”
